Originally, paths were made with straw, which became mulch for the gardens when rotted down. After years of building up the gardens, the straw was replaced with wood chips, to cut down on the work involved. We are now in the process of replacing the wood chips with pebbles as the wood chips wear down. Sandstone pavers act as stepping stones in between the pebbles.
Many of the gardens are edged with palm fronds. These last several years before they in turn become mulch.
